October is National Bullying Prevention Month at HHMS! 🧡
Over the last two weeks, all students across every grade level completed our annual lessons on defining bullying, choosing respect, and stepping up as Upstanders. Now, we’re putting those lessons into action!
Starting Monday, October 5th, our students will take part in a month-long Interactive Upstander Challenge focused on practicing kindness and respect every day. Look for our post on Monday for how students can participate!🌟
👉 Family Resources & Support:
Home Connection: Access parent versions of our Upstander lessons on our website to continue the conversation at home!
Bully Reporting Form: Safety comes first. Our online reporting tool is always available on our site for students and parents.
Save the Date: Wear ORANGE on Unity Day (Tues, Oct 20) to send a visible message against bullying!

Join us in celebrating three outstanding students who kicked off the school year with hard work, positive attitudes, and leadership! Here is what their teachers had to say about them:
📚 6th Grade – Emily W. "Emily has been very engaged in her learning in Science class. She is asking questions, answering questions, and has been a great help to her peers. Emily always comes in with a smile and a hello!"
⭐ 7th Grade – Eastyn P. "Eastyn is polite, helpful, and also very engaged in her learning. She has been really attentive to her learning assignments. Eastyn is always positive and ready for the day. She brings a light with her that is uplifting to others."
🎓 8th Grade – Tessa M. "Tessa is always ready for class and prepares herself for all assessments. She contributes to class discussions and is an absolute role model for other students to follow. Honestly, Tessa could win this award every month—she is just that awesome!"
We are so proud of Emily, Eastyn, and Tessa for setting the bar high this September! Keep shining! 👏✨

Every month, students at HHMS vote for who should be the Teacher and Staff of the Month, and why that person has stood out to them.
For September, students selected Mrs. Larson as the Teacher of the Month! 📚✨ Students who voted for her said:
"She is so kind, and she always puts a smile on my face"
"Mrs. Larson is kind, caring, and makes school actually fun"
"She is so kind and sweet and the best history teacher"
September Staff of the Month featured a tie between Mrs. Canada and our trusty duo, Deputy Connors and K9 Kip! 🐾⭐
Students who voted for Mrs. Canada said:
"She always handles situations well and is very funny"
"She is nice and is good at solving problems that need solving"
"because she's nice and fun to be around"
Students who voted for Deputy Connors & Kip said:
"When I get dropped off every morning, she and Kip greet me with smiles, and that starts my day"
"She is always making sure we're safe and always cares about everyone's feelings"
"Every lunch or if she comes into the classroom, she is always kind. If I'm upset, I get to pet Kip. She also gives me high fives, and that makes me laugh"
Congratulations to all our teachers and staff who were nominated, and a special, heartfelt congratulations to our September winners! 💙 Thank you for the difference you make in the lives and days of our students!

Last week, our students stepped out of the classroom and right into nature and history along the river’s edge. They got their feet wet (literally!) exploring the local aquatic ecosystem through water sampling, environmental monitoring, and seining. Back on dry land, they got up close with macroinvertebrates to analyze the health of the local ecosystem.
To top off an incredible field trip, a 17th-century historical interpreter brought the past to life with captivating stories of King William! 👑
A huge thank you to everyone who made this trip such a rich, hands-on learning experience.

Our 8th graders put their precision skills to the test in the lab today! Students measured exact volumes of colorful liquids, mixed them together, and calculated what the final volume and custom shade should be in each test tube.
The learning didn't stop when the mixing was over. Afterward, students analyzed their results, reflected on the purpose of the experiment, and put on their detective hats to troubleshoot any discrepancies between their predicted and actual measurements. 🔬✨
From measuring liquid volume with a graduated cylinder to investigating sources of error, these young scientists are mastering the scientific method!

Ms. Verona's Agriculture students headed outdoors to collect soil samples from the back fields and the inner courtyard, putting our soil science units into real-world action. But the unexpected star of the afternoon? A rosemary bush hiding out in the courtyard!
Nothing beats watching students connect classroom concepts to hands-on experiences (and getting a little sensory bonus along the way).

Today on #ITProDay, we celebrate the dedicated professionals who empower our teachers, support our students, and power our education every single day. Modern learning wouldn't be possible without your dedication, expertise, and endless patience. Thank you for all that you do for King William County Public Schools every day!

Before diving into their short argument essays, our students rolled up their sleeves for a hands-on textual evidence sort!
Here’s how they tackled the debate:
1️⃣ Sorted the Evidence: Analyzed quote cards to build two cases—were Nag and Nagaina truly villains, or were they simply acting on their natural cobra instincts?
2️⃣ Took a Side: Examined the evidence, chose their position, and crafted strong claim statements
3️⃣ Built the Argument: Selected their most compelling evidence to back up their claims, with some students already diving into their rough drafts!
Learning is hands-on (and a little messy), but we promise... no desks were harmed in the making of this activity! 😉 Desk-writing optional, critical thinking required. 📝✨
